| Super Bowl XLIII At Tampa, Florida Congradulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals for making it to Superbowl 43. The Pittsburgh Steelers will represent the American Football Conference and the Arizona Cardinals will represent the National Football Conference. The Super Bowl will be played in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Sunday, Feb. 1, 6 PM ET, NBC. National Football League History American football as played in the National Football League has it's origin in the early game of Rugby football. Walter Camp, who is considered the "Father of American Football",introduced some major changes in the 19th century. He was responsible for establishing the "line of scrimmage", how many downs it takes to make a 1st down and the distance between the 1st down markers. Then, early 20th century, the forward pass was introdued and the ability to score quickly was greatly enhanced. Professional football began in this country in 1882 and the National Football League was formed in 1920. The American Football League, which began in 1960 became a rival league to the NFL. With pressure to combine the two leagues they merged into the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (AmericanFootball Conference). This resulted in not just a season ending Championship Game, but a "Super Bowl". The Super Bowl today is one of the most watched television sporting events of the year. |
