Miami Dolphins History The Miami Dolphins are members of the AFC East Division of the National Football League based in Miami, Florida. The Dolphins were founded by Joseph Robbie and actor Danny Thomas and began to play in the American Football League as an expansion team in 1966. They then joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger. The Dolphins made their first Super Bowl appearance following the 1971 season in Super Bowl VI, but lost to the Dallas Cowboys. The Dolphins completed the NFL's very first and only completely perfect season in 1972, culminating with a Super Bowl win. They won all 14 regular season games, two playoff games and Super Bowl VII.The Miami Dolphins also won Super Bowl VIII, becoming the first team to appear in three consecutive Super Bowls and winning two back to back.The Dolphins Miami also appeared in Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XIX, but lost both games.For 26 years they were coached by Don Shula who became the most successful head coach in professional football history with five division titles, 10 playoff appearances and Super Bowl XIX before retiring after the 1999 season. |
